I am from Stanley in Co Durham. I trained as a medical student in Liverpool from 1977-82 and then went to the Isle of Man for my first job as a junior doctor. I met my wife there a few months later and we married in 1983. After returning to Liverpool then Newcastle to train as an anaesthetist, I took up a consultant post back on the island. I retired a year ago. We are fortunate in having three daughters and seven grandchildren, all living on the island.
